A measurable light phenomenon, a polluted witness dataset, real defence-science interest, unusual conductive geology, active mining and tunnelling - and a small residual core that still resists a clean explanation.

01 / THE HARD CORE
The original field campaign ran from 21 January to 26 February 1984. The team used radar, optical equipment, a laser, magnetometer, spectrum equipment, seismograph, Geiger counter and infrared equipment. The published conclusion did not identify a cause.
The report lists 36 radar registrations. Only a small subset was probably seen visually at the same time. That difference matters.
The field seismograph did not show local event-linked seismic activity. A direct 'earthquake light' explanation is therefore not supported by that campaign.
02 / RADAR
Two echoes separated by about 2.4 seconds and roughly 20-21 kilometres produced a reported minimum apparent velocity near 8.5 km/s. A contemporaneous visual report makes the event worth keeping in the high-value pile, but radar propagation and calibration alternatives must remain open.
03 / LASER
The published report describes a switch from single to double blinking while a laser was directed at the light in eight of nine tests. The crucial limitation is that the public record does not provide a fully synchronized electronic trace of laser state and blink output.
04 / FFI + PROJECT CONDIGN
Project Hessdalen received expertise and planning/analysis support connected to the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment / FFI environment. Years later the UK Defence Intelligence Staff's Project Condign used Hessdalen as a case when discussing UAP, earth-light and plasma-like explanations.
05 / GEOLOGY
A 2024 Journal of Applied Geophysics study mapped roughly 100 km of VLF measurements over about 100 km^2 and identified electrically conductive structures associated with mineralisation. The paper argues that the local geological setting may favour generation of the luminous phenomena. It does not claim to have solved Hessdalen.
06 / MINES + TUNNELS + WATER
Killingdal remained an active sulfide mine into 1986. The Orkla-Grana hydropower build involved extensive tunnelling and blasting in the same broad period. Most importantly, the 1984 Project Hessdalen bibliography itself cites a Jernbeton letter containing an overview of blasting at Brattset and Ulset. That means the original investigators were already checking this variable.
Mining, tunnelling and reservoir changes could in principle alter groundwater, fracture flow or electrical pathways in mineralised rock. This is a mechanism to test, not a result.
Several witnesses were travelling to or from mine shifts. That may reflect exposure: workers were simply on dark roads at the right hours. A mine correlation must correct for that bias.
TESTABLE HYPOTHESIS – NOT ESTABLISHED
The 1981–85 wave overlaps a period that combines 1970s geophysical work, continued Killingdal sulfide mining, the Orkla–Grana hydropower build, Brattset and Ulset tunnels, blasting and changing water pathways. The 1984 Project Hessdalen bibliography itself records a Jernbeton letter requesting an overview of blasts. That makes the industrial lead testable; it does not make it true.
Hessjøgruva and Killingdal should be treated as separate geological/industrial nodes. Older VLF, TURAM and SP measurements, plus the 2024 VLF survey and FFI / NDRE documentation, can be digitised against mineralised and sulfide-bearing structures relevant to the Hessdalen lights record. A natural battery / galvanic-cell model, electrochemical water flow, plasma or dusty-plasma/radon models are candidate mechanisms, not conclusions.
Falsification: recover dated blast, pumping, tunnel, weather and observation logs; correct for mine-worker exposure and reporting bias; then test lagged spatial/temporal association. If the signal is no stronger than matched control periods, downgrade the hypothesis.
07 / ONE NAME, MULTIPLE POPULATIONS
Published discussions already acknowledge conventional identifications among some reports. Combining weak and strong events into one bucket can make every proposed explanation fail. The correct next move is classification before causation.
08 / HISTORICAL CORRECTION
A local-history source describes a 'star with a tail' in 1811. That period coincides with the exceptionally prominent Great Comet C/1811 F1. The report is therefore poor evidence that the modern Hessdalen phenomenon has been continuously observed since 1811.
08B / SORT THE ORDINARY FIRST
The 1982 military-aircraft observation is retained as a specific witness/log question, not silently promoted to an anomalous craft. Other reports can be tested against aircraft routes, car headlights and road geometry, Venus and other bright planets, meteors/fireballs, cloud inversions, refraction, snow-lit atmosphere and other atmospheric conditions. The 12 February 1984 laser experiment is a separate instrument question, not evidence that every light was responsive. A conventional identification for one event does not explain every event; failure to identify one event does not make every event extraordinary.
09 / RUMOR LEDGER
Published witness accounts include landed-craft narratives, small humanoids, intense bodily sensations, blackout and perceived mental communication. They belong in the archive as testimony. No independent physical evidence used in this release confirms occupants, portals or a hidden base.
Arnfinn Grøtådal's published account describes a landed object and small figures. It is testimony, not a verified physical finding.
Leif Havik's narrative includes strong physical sensations, loss of control/blackout and perceived mental communication. No independent sensor record establishes the cause.
A 2024 Journal of Scientific Exploration paper proposes a microscopic multi-mouth wormhole working hypothesis. It is an exploratory idea, not empirical confirmation of a portal.
Military interest, FFI involvement and later Condign attention are real. They do not by themselves establish a secret exercise, weapon or base as the source.

The industrial-overlap hypothesis should now be attacked with primary records: blasting logs, mine pumping/groundwater records, exact observation timestamps and modern spatial statistics. If the correlation disappears, the dossier must say so.
